The question is being asked all over the world: Are we entering a new Cold War? Some say we are already in the midst of it. Other’s are more optimistic. Regardless, the global deterioration of peace is impossible to deny.
While the idea of a full-scale nuclear war seems impossibly ridiculous, the number of nuclear weapons around the world are both astounding and terrifying. Will mankind destroy itself? Maybe. Maybe not. In the meantime, Watchmaker focuses on the strange and surreal beauty of these weapons, and what the last “minutes to midnight” might look like.
Ploughshares Fund 11/2013
Global nuclear weapons stockpile numbers are at approximately 16,300.
Forbes / The Rand Corporation 04/2014
”Not only does Moscow see nuclear use as a potential escalatory option in a regional war, but it also envisions using nuclear weapons to de-escalate a conflict. The U.S. and its NATO partners too envision the possibility of nuclear use in a European war… and retain forward-deployed nuclear weapons in Europe under a doctrine known as extended deterrence. So improbable though it may seem, doctrine and capabilities exist on both sides that could lead to nuclear use…”
New START Treaty 9/2014
Russia and the United States share approximately 3,285 nuclear warheads, currently armed and ready to launch via ICBM’s (intercontinental ballistic missiles) or SLBM’s (submarine-launched ballistic missiles).
Washington Times 11/2014
“Russia has fired two intercontinental ballistic missiles from a submarine within one week,” and the US has tested the new Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense system, designed to intercept and destroy ICBM’s.

“What is the only provocation that could bring about the use of nuclear weapons? Nuclear weapons. What is the priority target for nuclear weapons? Nuclear weapons. What is the only established defense against nuclear weapons? Nuclear weapons. How do we prevent the use of nuclear weapons? By threatening the use of nuclear weapons. And we can’t get rid of nuclear weapons, because of nuclear weapons. The intransigence, it seems, is a function of the weapons themselves.”
Six Witnesses to a Dying Star
Composited Imagery/Original Audio Six Witnesses recognizes the unstoppable and inevitable passage of time; our sun will die, our planet will cease to support life. Everything will eventually dissipate back into of the dust of our universe. The six disparate houses share a unique end, standing lone and empty, shells of forgotten memories. They bear witness to the last stages of our dying sun, watching as the outer layers of the star begin to escape, and the brilliant nebula graces our dead earth. These moments will most likely be some of the most beautiful and serene of our planet’s existence. Six Witnesses was featured in the 2010 Scion Installation Six tour, featured in Los Angeles, Austin, Wichita, Minneapolis, and Brooklyn.
